Honda key fob

Battery failure can happen at any time — usually at the most inconvenient of times. If you need to replace your Honda key fob battery, the service team at First Texas Honda has the steps laid out for your below. To get started, you’ll need a flat circular 3-volt battery, which you can order from our parts center. Read on to learn more about how to open a Honda key fob battery and the steps you should take!

How to Open the Honda Key Fob

It’s easy! Follow these simple steps:

  • Find the button to release the metal key inside the fob. Slide that button open, then pull the key out.
  • Find the slot at the top of the key fob, and place the edge of the key inside. Twist the key lightly and the back of the key fob should pop off.

How to Replace Honda Key Battery

After you’ve popped the key fob open, you’ll need to make sure the key fob doesn’t fall apart. You don’t want to accidentally pull out any important components of the key fob. Follow these tips to avoid damaging your key fob:

  • Place your thumb above the spot where the battery sits.
  • Use your other hand to pull the dead battery out of the key fob, then replace it with the new one.
  • Line up the back and front halves of the key fob, then push them together until they click into place.

How to Program Honda Key

You’ll need to program your Honda key after the battery has been changed — and if you follow the steps below, it should be an easy process:

  1. Step inside your Honda and shut the doors. Make sure you have your key fob (or fobs if you’re programming more than one) at the ready.
  2. Insert the key, then turn it to “On.” Then, press and hold down the “LOCK” button on the fob for approximately one second.
  3. Take your finger off the button, then turn the key to “Off.” Repeat two more times.
  4. Once more, turn the key to “On,” then press and hold the “LOCK” button for one second. The doors should lock and unlock automatically. Afterward, your vehicle should be in remote programming mode.
  5. Again, hold down the “LOCK” button for one second. Let the locks cycle.
  6. The key fob should now be programmed to work with your car.
  7. Repeat the steps above for any additional key fobs.
  8. Don’t forget to exit remote programming mode. Simply do this by turning the key to “Off” when you’re finished.
